What is scalp micropigmentation?
SMP is a form of cosmetic micropigmentation where fine deposits of pigment are placed in the scalp as tiny dots that replicate the look of short hair follicles or stubble. Layered skilfully across an area, this creates the illusion of density (in thinning areas) or of a closely-shaved head of hair (on bald scalp). It's a technique-dependent, artistic procedure — and, like all SPMU, depends heavily on a qualified, hygienic practitioner.
What can it do — and what it can't Being honest about scope:
- It can: create the appearance of density or a buzz-cut look, help disguise thinning, scars or a receding hairline cosmetically, and offer a low-maintenance aesthetic option
- It can't: grow hair, regrow follicles, or treat the underlying cause of hair loss — it's a visual effect on the surface, not a medical treatment
- Understanding this distinction is essential: SMP changes how thinning looks, not the hair itself.
Who is it for?
SMP may suit people who want to disguise thinning hair, create the look of a shaved style on a bald scalp, camouflage scalp scars (including from a transplant), or soften the look of a receding hairline — and who want a cosmetic, rather than medical, solution. It's an option for various stages and patterns of hair loss, for different genders. Suitability, the realistic look, and pigment/colour are assessed at appointment.
How does it fit with hair-loss treatment?
This is worth thinking through. SMP is cosmetic camouflage, while treatments like PRP for hair, medical management, or a hair transplant address the hair itself. Some people: Use medical/regenerative options to address the hair loss, and/or Use SMP for immediate cosmetic appearance, and/or Combine approaches (e.g. SMP alongside, or after a transplant, for the look of added density) Crucially, if you have hair loss, it's worth a proper assessment of why (see why am I losing my hair) — SMP can be part of the picture, but shouldn't replace understanding the cause.
What to expect SMP is usually done over multiple sessions to build up the look gradually and
adjust as it heals. Expect an appointment (shape, density, hairline design, colour), the procedure (with comfort measures), a healing period, and the result settling over time — and, as with all SPMU, it's semipermanent, softening and needing periodic top-ups, with sun exposure affecting longevity. A qualified, hygienic, experienced practitioner is essential. Individual results vary.
