What happens to skin after major weight loss?
Skin has limited ability to shrink back after significant, sustained weight loss, especially with larger amounts or older skin. The result is loose, excess skin that can affect comfort, movement, hygiene and confidence — and which diet and exercise can't remove. Surgery is the way to address the skin itself.
What does the surgery involve?
It's usually a group of procedures rather than one, targeting the areas most affected — commonly the abdomen (a tummy tuck or a lower body lift), and often the arms, thighs, chest or breasts, and back. Each removes excess skin and reshapes the area. Your plan is mapped to your body and priorities. See our after-weight-loss body contouring service for detail.
Am I a candidate?
Generally, adults in good health whose weight has been stable for a sustained period — often around a year after major loss — with good nutrition, realistic expectations, and loose skin affecting daily life. If you've had bariatric surgery, nutritional status matters because it affects healing. An individual assessment is essential.
Is it one operation or several?
Because several areas are usually involved, it's frequently staged across more than one operation for safety, with a planned sequence. Sometimes areas are combined; your surgeon recommends what's safe for you rather than doing everything at once.
What about scars?
This is the honest trade-off: removing significant excess skin leaves notable, long-lasting scars, placed as discreetly as the procedure allows. For most people the improvement in contour and comfort is worth it — but you should understand the scarring fully before deciding. Your surgeon will show you where scars are likely to fall.
What is recovery like?
Recovery is more involved than for a single procedure, particularly across stages — expect a rest period, supportive garments, swelling and limited activity easing over the following weeks, and a graduated return to normal activity. See the recovery guide.
How is this different from a standard tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck addresses the abdomen alone. After major weight loss, the excess skin usually spans several areas, so the plan is broader and often staged — closer to a body-contouring programme than a single procedure. Our general guide body contouring after weight loss covers the non-surgical and surgical picture together.
